Industry Facts

Canadians depend on reliable, convenient and competitively priced transportation fuels.

We all have a lot on the go. There’s the daily commute to work and school; trips to the hockey arena and soccer field; the family vacation; visits to family and friends. The list goes on – and then of course there’s the movement of all the goods and products we use in our daily lives. In fact, here in Canada, we use around 80 billion litres of gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels every year. The industry that refines and distributes this fuel is helping to keep Canadians on the move.

Conventional Fuels

Every day, around 200 million litres of fuel are pumped into vehicle fuel tanks across Canada. The industry you see today is the result of over a hundred years of investment in expertise, technology, and infrastructure. The sector involved in bringing fuel to the pumps includes 16 refineries, 75 fuel terminals and approximately 12,000 retail and commercial sites across the country.

Together, Canadian refiners produce around 120 billion litres of fuel and other refined products every year and contribute approximately $12 billion to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Low-Carbon Fuels

Canadian Fuels Association members are also at the forefront of innovative solutions to reduce emissions and accelerate large-scale production and distribution of low-carbon fuels – leveraging our existing energy infrastructure. Today, our members produce more than 70% of Canada’s low-carbon fuels through 10 clean fuels facilities located from coast to coasts. These products can be blended with or replace conventional fuels, reducing the impact of the transportation sector on the environment.

Employment in the Refining Sector

Canada’s refining sector offers numerous benefits for professionals seeking stable, rewarding, and impactful careers. In 2024, the transportation fuels industry supported around 115,000 jobs across refining, logistics, retail, and marketing. Within that, approximately 8,000 individuals worked in the refining sector, with hundreds more employed in low-carbon fuel facilities nationwide. These positions span diverse fields, including engineering, operations, finance, human resources, and environmental science, offering dynamic career paths in an industry critical to Canada’s economy and energy future.
